What an All-Inclusive Price Should Include
"All-inclusive" is the norm at serious centers, and it should mean exactly that. Take AyaSelva's published package as a reference for what a fair price covers: a private room with its own restroom, every ceremony, diet-compliant meals, transport from Iquitos including the boat leg, jungle walks and flower baths, and integration sessions, with the operator stating there are no hidden costs. If a quote does not clearly cover lodging, all meals, all ceremonies and local transfers, ask what is missing before you compare it against one that does. A $900 retreat that excludes transport and half the meals is not cheaper than a $1,200 one that covers everything.
Why Prices Vary So Wildly
The spread is real: $750 at the bottom, $8,000 at the top, for what is nominally the same thing. Some of the gap is honest. Screening costs money; Temple of the Way of Light has every applicant's questionnaire reviewed by a licensed doctor and psychologist, and its flagship 12 days run $4,440. Small groups cost money too, because six guests split the same fixed costs that twenty would.
The rest of the gap is marketing. Blue Morpho has TIME and National Geographic features and premium unpublished pricing. Media coverage tells you a center is famous, not that its screening is better, and some of the most expensive retreats in Peru spend more on their funnel than on their facilitator ratio. The Costs Nobody Puts in the Brochure
The retreat fee is not the trip budget. Getting to the Amazon centers means a flight to Iquitos on top of your international ticket, since no road reaches the city; you fly in, or arrive by very slow riverboat. Most itineraries also need a night in Iquitos, Cusco or Tarapoto on one or both ends, though better centers fold logistics in: AyaSelva, for example, includes the airport pickup, the Iquitos overnight arrangement and the boat to Tamshiyacu.
Then the small stuff: tips for staff and facilitators if you choose to give them, jungle-appropriate gear, travel insurance that does not exclude your plans, and flexible flights in case your integration days matter more than your original return date. None of these are scandalous. They just belong in the math before you compare a $1,200 center against a $2,500 one.
When Cheap Is a Red Flag, and When It Is Not
Cheap alone proves nothing: Paojilhuasca runs from $800 for 8 days and is one of Reddit's most-trusted budget names. The red flags are what sometimes travels with a low price. A center that asks zero health questions before taking your deposit. A brew of unknown origin served by whoever is around. Ceremonies run out of a hostel rather than a dedicated center; the one 2025 death on public record happened at a hostel ritual in Loreto, not at an established retreat. Big anonymous groups with no facilitator you can name.
