Onikano

Onikano is the name Reddit's r/Ayahuasca community brings up more than any other when someone asks where to go in Peru. Our fresh research pass found more than the community chatter: an active website, a decade-plus of directory reviews, and a Shipibo family that owns and runs the land. It sits in the community-recommended tier only because we have not visited in person, but the paper trail here is stronger than the label suggests.

What Onikano offers

Onikano runs in the Allpahuayo-Mishana National Reserve, a protected rainforest area about 22 km from Iquitos, reached by a road transfer the center arranges. Worth flagging: our files had it near Pucallpa, but the live research places it firmly in the Iquitos region, and it operated until 2024 under the name Yosi Ocha before rebranding. Retreats run from one week to five-plus weeks for full dietas. A one-week stay is priced around €1,320 on their site, with four ayahuasca ceremonies plus a San Pedro ceremony, rapé, sananga, cleansing baths, and consultations with the maestro.

The center is led by Maestro Heberto García, Shipibo name Niwen Koshi, who has guided ceremonies for more than three decades in a Meraya lineage, the high-level traditional Shipibo curanderismo, with his family handling food, transport, and daily life. On screening, Onikano requires a retreat application form covering health history, medications, and allergies, reviewed personally with a 48-hour response, and states plainly that "certain medical conditions and medications are incompatible with the treatments offered at Onikano." One Reddit account notes groups running up to 15 guests in a busy week, which is larger than the intimate framing implies.

What people are saying

The reviews are deep and overwhelmingly warm. On AyaAdvisors it holds 4.9 across roughly 99 reviews, and on TripAdvisor a 5.0 across 89. One AyaAdvisors reviewer wrote of Heberto, "This humble, softly-spoken man is an extraordinary shaman... I know that with Heberto in control I am safe and need never be afraid." A TripAdvisor guest put it simply: "I love that this retreat is run by the local shaman. It's really about healing and not just about having visions."

Reddit is where its reputation was built. In the 2026 recommendation thread, one poster called the icaros "world class" and said the medicine was "strong without being overwhelming." That said, there is a bad-review cluster, and we will not hide it: a detailed 2024 thread from the Yosi Ocha era criticized the experience as short on reverence and healing focus. Defenders in the newer thread push back directly, with one writing, "Onikano is very reputable and the bad reviews do not reflect my experience at all." The honest read

The strongest caveat is the one we just named. A center with a hundred glowing reviews and one sharp dissent from its former branding is not a red flag, but it is a signal worth reading yourself before you book, not around. The rebrand from Yosi Ocha is recent enough that some of the older feedback describes a different operation.

Group size is the other honest point: up to 15 in a full week is a real crowd for ceremony work, so ask directly how many guests share your dates. And while Onikano lists contraindications and reviews your health form, it publishes no on-site medical staffing or facilitator ratio. Iquitos has a hospital; the reserve does not. Onikano vs AyaSelva

We will be straight here, because Onikano earns it. If your priority is authentic Shipibo lineage, a maestro with 30-plus years, master-plant dietas measured in weeks, and a long public track record, Onikano may genuinely be the better fit, and AyaSelva, which works in the Mestizo tradition, is not the automatic pick.

Where AyaSelva pulls ahead is intimacy and screening transparency. It caps every retreat at six guests against Onikano's busy-week 15, publishes its full contraindication list up front, and runs $1,200 for seven days with four ceremonies, a touch under Onikano's roughly €1,320 week.
