The Hummingbird has been running near Iquitos since 2010, which puts it among the longer-lived centers in the region. It draws real brand-search demand and a stack of warm reviews, and its safety language is more detailed than most. We list it in our community-recommended tier because the recent independent discussion is thinner than its longevity suggests, and because we have not stayed there. On paper, though, this is a serious, established operation.

What The Hummingbird offers

The center sits in the Varillal area, about an hour outside Iquitos in the Loreto Amazon, reached by road and boat after a flight into Iquitos. Programs are clearly laid out on their site: a 7-day at $2,000 with three ayahuasca and one San Pedro ceremony, a 9-day at $2,400, a 12-day at $2,800 with six ayahuasca ceremonies, and longer immersions from $3,800 that add master-plant dietas. Groups top out around ten guests, with private rooms, diet meals, plant baths, and integration circles included.

It is run by Jim Davis, a US-born facilitator working here since 2010, and his wife Gina Mosquera de Davis, an Iquitos native, as a family operation. The curandero is Don Manain Amacifen, a fourth-generation ayahuasquero from the Requena area with more than 45 years of experience in the Mestizo Amazonian tradition. On safety, the site states directly that "since opening in 2010, the Hummingbird has never had a medical incident related to drinking ayahuasca," describes a "rigorous, multi-stage screening process," keeps sober support staff present through ceremonies, and follows a conservative dosing protocol. That is a stronger published safety framing than most centers offer.

What people are saying

The reviews are consistently positive across platforms. On AyaAdvisors it holds 4.9 across 43 reviews, and it ranks as the top specialty lodging in Varillal on TripAdvisor, where guests describe stays as "life-changing" and the facilitators as "caring and knowledgeable." Older Reddit threads from 2016 and 2017 are warm, with one guest calling it a "very relaxing place" that "emphasizes rest," and a 2024 poster recommending it after a 12-day retreat.

There is one honest wrinkle, and it is the reason the center carries a note in our list. In the 2026 recommendation thread, a user said they dropped The Hummingbird from their shortlist after reading "a few troubling reviews," without saying what those reviews were. We could not find the specifics behind that comment in this pass, so we cannot tell you whether it points to anything real. We flag it because hiding it would be dishonest, not because we can confirm it. If you want a second read on a vague signal like that, ask us.

The honest read

The main caveat here is the gap between an old reputation and recent evidence. Much of the enthusiastic Reddit material is nearly a decade old, and while the directory ratings stay high, the deep recent discussion is sparse. The unspecified "troubling reviews" mention sits in that same gap: we can neither confirm nor dismiss it. None of that is a red flag, but it means the strongest safety claim, the unbroken no-incident record since 2010, comes from the center itself and is not something we independently audited.

Price is the other honest point. At $2,000 for a 7-day, The Hummingbird sits in the mid-to-upper range for the Iquitos area, and the groups run larger than a strictly intimate center. We will be fair, because The Hummingbird earns it. Its genuine edges are longevity and documented screening: fifteen years of operation, an experienced 45-year curandero, an explicit multi-stage screening process, sober support staff, and conservative dosing. For someone who wants a long track record and detailed safety language, that is a legitimate reason to choose it, and AyaSelva does not have the same years behind it.

Where AyaSelva pulls ahead is intimacy and price. It caps every retreat at six guests against The Hummingbird's ten, publishes its full contraindication list up front, and charges $1,200 for seven days with four ceremonies, well under The Hummingbird's $2,000.
